Swedish Schools Still Free for International Students -- For Now
The number of international students in Sweden has been growing rapidly, primarily due to two factors. First, because Sweden is so committed to universal English in its population, there are lots of academic offerings in English. International students can find English language programs in all of the most popular disciplines -- which include social sciences, business or law (34.8 % of international student in Sweden); engineering, manufacturing and construction (17.9%); humanities and arts (17.6%); sciences (12.4%); health and welfare (9.1%); and education (4.8%). The number of international students in Sweden has now surpassed 36,000.
Second, international students pay no tuition!! Just like Swedish students, international students admitted to Swedish undergraduate or masters programs can attend without paying any tuition. This is reflective of an overall commitment to higher education -- Sweden ranked third in spending worldwide on tertiary education at 2.2% of GDP, behind only Denmark and Norway.
For more information on the increasing number of international students in Sweden, read the whole article from StudyinSweden.se here.
However, this great deal is being threatened. Sweden has proposed charging tuition to all international students except those from EU countries. This week, Swedish universities and unions went on the record to object to the government proposal . Academics are concerned that proposals to introduce tuition fees for international students at Sweden’s universities could discourage gifted foreign students from coming to study in Sweden.
To find out more, you can read the entire article from The Local here. Lets hope that Sweden maintains its commitment to international education, as any affordable international education program, no matter how few spots are available, provides hope and opportunity to students that couldn't otherwise afford to go abroad.

I hope it stays that way. I am doing an online MBA with BTH in SWeden. I had several admissions from Universities in the UK over the last 10 years for the same programme but the question of tuition fees for foreign students always prevented me from joining. The Swedish system is making quality education freely available to numerous people from third world countries.

I have immensely benefited by chosing Sweden for my postgraduate studies and research.
Another amazing advantage of studying in Sweden is the time frame.A focused grduate student can obtain an MSc or equivalent in pretty short time as compared to other countries.

For Sweden the introduction of tuition fees for international students may be a good thing in terms of generating revenue; however with respect to the internation students wanting to access this and other like opportunities that may not necessarily be available to them in their respective countries, it is a "nightmare". I really hope that there can be an alternative to this proposal.
i really hope it stays that way.i have a degree in cell biology and genetics and i wish to pursue a masters degree during the next autumn.
pls cam sme1 kindly assist me.I applied and forwarded all my credentials to the swedish school of environmental chemistry last year, but my admission didnt pull through because my academic transcript has got less than 120ECTS.I am so keen on partaking in the swedish schools masters package.
Questions:
1.Can my credentials be transferred to another masters programme from SSEC
2.Are there any masters programmes in science that would require less than 120ECTS
3.What would be a related masters course for me to study in Sweden.I'm a graduate of industrial chemistry form the University of Nigeria Nsukka. Please kindly assist me with any information by sending me a mail to edungor2000@yahoo.com
Thanks a lot.
I think that Sweden should keep their system, ONLY and If ONLY other cuntries can provide same opportunities for Swedish international students, especially well developed countries. I am an Swedish international student who peviously worked in Sweden, but now I am studying abroad, and I dont think it is fair that i payed taxes for international students to pursue their education in Sweden for free, when I cant get the same opportuniy abroad.
It's quite interesting that higher education in sweden is free of tuition but I need to know if there is any organization in sweden that supports a financial aid for international students that covers their living expenses or are there any research or teaching assistantships

Complete details and application materials for the 2008 Avar Press Literary Scholarship Competitions are now available on our website www.avarpress.com by following the Xen Scholarships link.
All essays must be non-fiction and original work, analyzing any single aspect of D. J. Solomon’s Xen: Ancient English Edition, ISBN 0976066009, Avar Press, 2004. This satire, presented as a future “last testament of mankind,” is the story of a misanthropic scientist who rids the world of evil, marking the end of hate and prejudice. The use of the essay as part of the writer’s routine school work in any capacity is permitted.
The major changes since last year include the greatly increased size of the awards and the expanded eligibility criteria.
The college competition deadline is January 31, 2008. All matriculated students, studying at any college or university in the world are eligible to enter. First, second and third place winners will receive US$1000, $750 and $500 respectively.
As in the past, the awards are made directly to the student.
If I can answer any further questions about the scholarships, please let me know.
